I rediscover the familiar world of the Alto Minho in Portugal, life, death and the pendulum swinging between the two. I'm rediscovering my link with this land, with my family heritage, both physical and spiritual. By living in close contact with nature, I get closer to natural cycles, to magical and mysterious transitory movements. The presence of women is constant and intense. Women beget, create, kill and nurture. A pagan, earthly dimension hovers over all things and cannot be ignored. The earth is in contact with the whole body. At this critical moment in our journey as humanity, we are fuelled by the desire to return to an idyllic and saving nature. But we ourselves are that place. It no longer makes sense to see the human being as an isolated element, above or alongside nature itself. Nature is "a mass of living contradictions", as Gabriel Tarde put it. I agree with the British anthropologist Tim Ingold, who believes that being alive is a process of constant learning and opening up, of connection to the earth, of movement of bodies, of manipulation of things, human or non-human, living or inert, in permanent and mutual interaction. The body is connected to the world through a constant exchange of forces and energies. In these images, bodies, things and people find a place where they touch down and remain there, in a rift in time. We are not outside
