The Ukrainian photographer shows us the beach of his childhood through a swim ring. The circular object isolates but also gives visibility to beach scenes that are at once banal and funny. Behind this lightness, however, these images document a change. The photographer is not able to retrieve the memories of his youth, the seaside has been walled up by holiday homes and hotels, entire sections are fenced off. Tourists have lost all respect for nature and the beaches are dirty. Ukraine is transforming very quickly and this changement has kindled his curiosity and his desire to experience it. For his work he blends into the crowds to get closer to the people. The swing ring helps him to become an observer as well as an holidaymaker. By making the shape of the swim ring always visible in the photographs, he allows the viewer to think about them both as staged and documented reality.
