Présentation

Student residences are the only type of social housing that currently exists in Ukraine. They were built during the Soviet era to accommodate students and allow them to move freely around the vast country to study. Since then, the buildings and living conditions in the dormitories have not changed much, unlike Ukraine and its people. I wanted to photograph these residences because they represent the co-existence of the Soviet legacy and the new pro-European generation. I was drawn to this ambiguity because I believe it is representative of the change in mentality in Ukraine today - an ex-communist country that is moving towards globalisation.
