Each year, in the city of Jacmel in southern Haiti, the most important carnival in the country takes place, during Les Gras. Most of the people create and renew their costume, freely inspired by everything that crosses Haitian reality and imagination. Since 2014, backed by this intangible and artistic heritage, Jacmel has been recognized as a creative city of crafts and folk art by Unesco.
To convey this marching magic, Corentin Fohlen has chosen to isolate each character from the carnival crowd by setting up his studio outdoors, and each time composing his own light. His astonishing and precise work reveals beyond the beauty of the costumes, the inventive talent of a people still standing.
