"Christine Mathieu explores the essential experiences of life: birth, desire, life and death are the motors of a photographic act lived as the visceral need to transcribe feelings about herself and others. It is a look at the world around her, the expression of a "struggle between two constraints: the pain of living and the exaltation of desire" she says, as if this interference ordered the need to confront her work with the gaze of others and to testify to an unabashed sensitivity. Disturbing and mysterious, these sometimes violent images, both raw and sensual, are based on the motherhood of the body and its flesh and, beyond, of the soul-body relationship, the invisible part of our being through an imaginary fed with graphic and metaphorical elements." - Charlotte Lorant
