Hors les Murs

Vernissage Centre d'Art la Fenêtre

Since 2009, the Boutographies have been bringing together a network of local actors in an "Hors les murs" (out of walls) program in Montpellier, in the heart of the city and its downtown neighborhoods.

During the highlight of the festival, these cultural venues and partner galleries offer exhibitions of photographs from their own programming or from the Boutographies.

The Dream is over
The 3 times or the Earth Revolution
from Agnes AL
Alice, la nuit y sera from Lilie Pinot
Traverser les songes from Marie Andreasz

This exhibition’s purpose is to bring to light the universe of three photographers; each of whom leaves a big part to the unconscious and the imaginary and where the searching for light, even reduced to its smallest point, is neither illusory nor secondary.

That much is the common project of these three artists who, while cultivating their singularity, turn out to be sometimes really similar in their works. Displaying a common will to invite the audience to be actors of their own quests, the photographers invite them to scrutinize each and every detail to discover the image, and to go as far as recreating it with their own emotions and experiences.

When, at the end of summer I went to see my grandfather, it had been a really long time since I had last seen him. I asked myself what had become of him, of his house and of the little shed bordering the railroads where the August months seemed unending.

N°3 L'Aberrante Galery
Les métamorphoses de Protée from Emilie Arfeuil

“Like the chrysalis that turns into a butterfly, the petal that blooms from the bud, the snake that sheds his skin in ribbons, humans change. Naturally of course as it is the cycle of life. But they also change of their own will. Not necessarily like the chameleon by the way, whose only goal is to merge into the landscape. More like Proteus…”

OBTA from Nathalie Sapin

In a performance by the choreograph/artist from Montpellier Patrice Barthès, Nathalie Sapin photographs tango’s sensuality. Bodies bared in parts that are usually hidden and reciprocally... Skin and sphere work as actors with the light and create a contrast, generating a carefully restrained sensual tension, which we could almost call erotic.

Liu Huan 100 noms de familles © Liu Huan

N°5 Galerie St Ravy
 by Liu Huan

is a photography series that questions women’s rights of succession to their family name.  In Chinese, 姓 (xing) means « last name ». It is made of two characters 女 (nv), ‘’woman’’, and 生 (sheng), ‘’birth’’. Yet in China, if a child is born without its father’s recognition, it doesn’t get a civil status. A hundred family names are listed in my country. I wrote them one by one on a woman’s belly, whose breathing makes them disappear under water, turning the latter darker and darker.

N°6 Gazette café
Rivages from Elsa Beaumont

The Niger River goes through six countries including Mali. In 2004, I boarded a boat going from Koulikoro (Bamako’s river port) to Gao passing through Ségou, Djenné, Mopti, Niafunké, and Timbuktu. Named Djoliba in Bambara, it is a legendary river. The same scenes have been repeating themselves on those shores for centuries. Thanks to the river men can travel exchanging merchandise, and connecting to other cultures. These images are emblematic. They reveal the intensity of the instants where the boat arrives. Beautifully organised choreographies then take place, blending the bright colours of the loincloths with the ochre colours of the water and shores. It is now difficult to observe those scenes without having in mind the present armed conflicts that came to weaken the stability of the population, creating an unsafe and chaotic climate.

Invisibles vieux from Andrea Mantovani

Humans have always had a need to stay somewhere, to inhabit a place, to appropriate a territory, to have a home. When age-related difficulties come, how do we keep the notions of inhabiting and citizenship alive? 11 witnesses aged between 66 and 97 years old, have accepted to talk about this matter. They all have the common point of living in Montpellier.

N°10 Chateau Capion
Human Nature from Claudia Fritz

The work of the Austrian photographer Claudia Fritz is about human interventions within landscape, in their obvious or undetectable aspects. Black rectangles are affixed on archetypal scenes, obstructing the view and disturbing the search for clues in the image. Objects or masks, the black rectangles preserve the enigma of shapes and consequences of the human presence in landscapes that are considered natural.

Géographie désenchantée from Yvon Bobinet

In this exhibition, Yvon Bobinet shows his vision of the world expressed through a comprehensive device displaying the model of a “real-fake” map, seven stereoscopic representations of “fake-real” maps in the form of analytical photographs, with a video made of the latter. Technically, the photographs are constructed for a binocular vision requiring specific “3D” glasses, as well as for the video images. Seven colour photographs (in monocular vision) extracted from the video complete the exhibition..

Estelle Delesalle Palingenesia © Estelle Delesalle

N°12 Hôtel Mercure Montpellier Centre Comédie
Echo
by Estelle Delesalle

“The artist’s poetic and symbolic approach is linked to the history of curiosity as it emerged at the end of the Middle Ages and at the beginning of the Renaissance. Her contemporary and performative vision on wonderfulness eludes the stated territory of the work of art by continuously renewing herself in the most singular places and subjects. Embodied through the study of a garden, of an impossible perfume, of a harmed work of art, or even palingenesia, the signs revealed by the artist allow us to catch a glimpse of the dynamics of what both escapes us and fills us with wonder.” Jean de Loisy and Rébécca Lamarche Vadel

Schmitz Ulrike The Missing Link 01

N°13 Pierresvives
The Missing Link from Ulrike Schmitz

The Neanderthal genome, a human species that disappeared 39.000 years ago, has recently been decoded. Harvard scientists are now working on its synthetic reproduction in a human stem cell, which could be incorporated into a surrogate mother. The (re)birth of a Neanderthal clone has thus become a plausible future scenario. The surreal case of a Neanderthal clone has awoken the photographer’s interest whose work deals with our origins and our potential future. The images follow a metaphorical process.
