Biographie
Alex Bex, born in 1993, is a French-Texan photographer based in Berlin. His work explores the impact of popular visual media on traditional representations, in particular masculinity and its social construction. Through his photography, he interrogates the cultural biases with which he grew up in order to study and question them.
Présentation
In a rapidly changing society, it is necessary to question dominant male representations and to highlight the impact of visual media on gender roles. By documenting the Cowboy, idealised by popular culture as a 'real man' (strong, silent, solitary, self-reliant and emotionally distant) the photographer aims to confront a persistent idea of masculinity and explore its current complexities. He travels across Texas, spending time at rodeos, on ranches, and participating in the daily life of the local ranching community, to learn about the realities, routines and difficulties of the cowboy, which he confronts with the conventions of his cultural myth.
