"Holy Cow" traces, over eight years, the production of the meat consumed worldwide today—much of which comes from Brazil. The zebu, once sacred in India and introduced to Brazil in the 19th century, now lies at the heart of a booming market, fueled by exports to China. To meet demand, ranchers—backed by a powerful lobby—expand their herds through advanced genetic selection and the cloning of their best livestock. Facing climate change, to which this energy-intensive and environmentally destructive industry contributes, ranchers are now breeding animals that can be slaughtered earlier and adapt to extreme weather conditions, such as torrential rains and intense droughts.
