Biographie

Demetris Koilalous has been living and working in Athens as an independent photographer since 1990. He has collaborated with various public and private agencies, with local authorities, with institutions, with national, regional and municipal museums, as well as with theaters. His work has been published in multiple greek magazines and newspapers. He has been teaching photography in both public and private institutions since 2004.

“Caesura” manifests the brief silent pause in the middle of a poetic verse or a musical phrase. Demetris Koilalous images are to be thought of as pauses in the process which turns the immigrants from the South of the Mediterranean into mere actors of a history that is beyond them. Going further than geopolitical upsets of which they are the victims, Demetris Koilalous aims at crystallising their presence as human beings, aside from the context to which they are systematically associated - through the repetition of images of distraught, distressed crowds. These images are deliberately reminiscent of those the first Greek and Italian immigrants would send home to their families from the New World, as to demonstrate the successful integration into their new life. They also depict the hope that drives these newcomers to Europe, looking beyond their will to escape war and misery.
