Présentation
In response to growing electricity consumption and a desire for energy independence, a large-scale hydroelectric scheme is being developed in the Balkan states, a region nicknamed the "Blue Heart of Europe" because of its large number of wild rivers. In addition to the 1,500 hydroelectric power stations already in operation, promoters claim that a significant increase in their number is required. Critics counter that very few of these projects make economic sense, and that they are being set up to serve private or political interests.
