Biographie
Ikuru Kuwajima studied journalism at University of Missouri, Columbia. He left the States to travel through Europe and Asia, where he worked on multiple photographic projects - first in Eastern Europe and then various post-Soviet Central Asian countries and Russia for 10 years.
Présentation
In the Pamir Mountains, IK shot the age-old trail which runs alongside the Panj River that delineates Tajikistan and Afghanistan. This route takes us through hostile and awe-inspiring landscapes for hundreds of kilometres, on the Afghan side.
The images make us travel from left to right - as if seen according to the Asiatic reading direction - in a panoramic format. This choice in format underlines the fragility of human presence in landscapes that do not seem to bear any anthropic marks, except of course that of the trail itself. This trail is barely visible on the side of immense rocky masses; it is a thread on which the lives of men are hanging, oscillating dangerously on the verge of oblivion, in danger of being swallowed by the elements.
