Présentation

In 2009, Iris Della Roca went to Rio de Janeiro as a volunteer for the association "Barter a weapon against a brush". This association, in the heart of the Rocinha favela, offers artistic activities to children. They have a family, a home and go to school like most of their age group, but are exposed to great insalubrity and a climate of permanent violence. By sharing their daily life, she creates very special bonds with them. "We become very close, like family". She thus discovers their suffering in terms of the image they have of themselves and are perceived by society. Reduced to their place of life, parts of a whole, they feel trapped in a decor, without individuality.
So the project was born to create portraits in which they could reveal themselves as they dream of being seen, in order to allow them to invent, for the time of a photo session, their reality as they wish it to be. "Like a power grab on their condition, the time of the photo, they transmit the society in which they live".
With these portraits, Iris Della Roca reveals a reality that is more accurate than the one that serves as a backdrop: the reality of a dreamy truth, the variable geometry of destinies that have yet to be built.
