They say that objects have no soul and no heart. Nevertheless, when one touches them they transform and recount their history as if charged with a special mission. They hold our gaze, appropriate our good intentions, become merchandise. We watch them take or lose value, excite or extinguish desire. Perhaps the definition of an artist of genius would be a Pygmalion in reverse: someone who transformed a person or a beast into an object so perfect that we would never know if it were a being or a thing.
