Like all totalitarian architectural undertakings, Mussolini's urban planning work pursued several objectives: to ensure his legitimacy by reviving a glorious ancient past, to assert his authority through monumental achievements, and to bring about the advent of 'new' men, whose strength, purity and devotion would serve the state's ambitions of conquest.
