Biographie
Hambourg, 1976. After studying design and photography at the university of Hambourg, Regine Petersen continued her studies at the Royal College of Art, London. Her series Stars fell on Alabama was exhibited at Tucson (USA), Munich, Milan, Savignano, and in the official programme of the Rencontres d'Arles 2013 (short list for Prix Découverte).
Présentation
A meteorite bears witness to the first formation of matter in our solar system. It has remained unaltered since it formed in the dust of our sun’s birth, holding the memory of the beginnings under its surface for billions of years. Looking at a meteorite is not unlike looking at a photograph: we are faced with an object which we relate to through particular notions of distance and time. Holding a representation of the past, its symbols bear clues yet resist resolution.
The images selected for this portfolio are part of the first chapter of my trilogy on witnessed meteorite falls. Taking the incident of a woman struck by a meteorite in 1954 in her Alabama home as a starting point, the work became an investigation touching memory, human relationships, religion, race and slavery.
