Biographie

Julieta Averbuj is a curator and artist based in Barcelona, born in 1986. She currently works as a curator at imaginCafé, a private cultural space in Barcelona, where she organizes exhibitions and cultural events. In her spare time, she experiments with photography and film, and her works have been selected and exhibited at international film festivals, galleries, and publications.
Julieta graduated in 2014 from the University of Cinema of Buenos Aires (FUC), and has since been actively involved in the art and film community. She has directed the experimental section of the Lima Film Festival in Peru, and has also served as a jury member for the first edition of Fronteira, the International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival of Goiania, Brazil.
Her first photobook, "El Juego de la Madalena," was published with the editorial support of Fuego Books University of Cádiz (Cuadernos de Kursala), and was presented at Les Reencontres d'Arles in 2022.

Présentation

"El Juego de la Madalena" ( “The Madeleine Game”) is an exhibition proposal that aims to convey the essence of the eponymous book, published in 2022, into a physical space. Through formal reinterpretation of family archive images and the incorporation of participatory elements, the exhibition invites viewers on a playful and interactive journey through memory.

The title of the exhibition, "El Juego de la Madalena" refers to a game invented by the artist's father, in which newspaper photographs were transformed into improvised stories with the madeleine (a type of pastry) as the central theme. This game of resignifying images coincides with Proust's concept of the "madeleine" where a perception evokes a memory. Thus, the exhibition proposes a similar game, where viewers can compose and recompose the images, establishing their own connections and meanings.

Through a playful and participatory approach, the exhibition seeks to convey the fragmented, mutable, subjective, and random nature of memory. Archive images are presented in a non-sequential manner, allowing viewers to discover and establish connections between them. In addition, visual and tactile elements are incorporated to encourage interaction and participation of the audience in the process of constructing memories.

"El Juego de la Madalena" creates a space for reflection on the importance of play and viewer participation in memory construction. Through the reinterpretation of archive images and the invitation to explore and establish personal connections, the exhibition aims to generate a unique and meaningful experience for visitors, encouraging them to reflect on their own relationship with the past and the subjective nature of memories.
