Expelled from low-rent housing, French families survive in makeshift housing on the edge of towns, without electricity or running water. In order to ensure a decent life for their children, the parents work odd jobs. Their priority is to preserve the family unit at all costs in order to prevent the social services from placing their children in care. Filled with a sense of shame, these families often refuse all contact with the outside world. In France, there is no precise census to assess the extent of the phenomenon; often hidden, grouped in very small units, these camps are difficult to identify.
